Custom Aerospace Spring Manufacturing

CUSTOM AEROSPACE SPRINGS

When your design calls for a spring that catalog suppliers can’t stock, you need a manufacturer who can work to print. That might be a compression spring in a certified material, or a torsion spring held to a free-length tolerance your current source won’t quote. Anderson Quality Spring (AQS) is a custom aerospace spring manufacturer that builds compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, flat wound springs, and wire forms to aerospace specifications, and has done so since 1993.

Springs in aerospace applications don’t get second chances. A spring that fails in a flight control mechanism, a landing gear assembly, or a cabin latch is a spring that wasn’t built to spec in the first place. AQS manufactures to the material, tolerance, and traceability requirements the aerospace industry demands, with the documentation your supplier qualification process expects.

We work with aerospace and aircraft manufacturers across commercial aviation, general aviation, and kit aircraft, producing custom springs and metal forms where performance is not negotiable. From prototype through production, AQS holds spec across the run, not just the first article.

The Sky's the Limit

The aerospace industry runs on documentation, traceability, and parts that endure. Aerospace springs operate under repetitive loading, extreme temperature swings, corrosion exposure, and high-stress duty cycles, the conditions that separate a precision spring manufacturer from a job shop. Aerospace manufacturing leaves no margin for a part that drifts out of spec, so AQS engineers every aerospace spring for fatigue strength, dimensional stability, and long service life. Get it right the first time, and every time after that.

Our Services & Capabilities

AQS controls the aerospace manufacturing processes from wire to finished, packaged components. Our Canby, Oregon facility runs in-house CNC coiling and forming, shot peening, presetting (rare and fringe capability for AQS), powder coating (outsourced), labeling, and packaging. Keeping these manufacturing processes under one roof means faster turnaround, tighter quality control, and full accountability for every aerospace spring we ship. Where an aerospace specification calls for a process we don’t hold in-house, we route it through our network of certified outside processors and hold them to the same quality standards.

Material Selection for Aerospace Springs

Aerospace spring performance starts with the right material. AQS manufactures aerospace springs in carbon steel, stainless steel, beryllium copper, and other materials selected for the application’s stress, temperature, and corrosion-resistance requirements. Material choice determines fatigue life and corrosion resistance in service, so we match the alloy to the environment, whether that’s a high-heat, engine-adjacent component or a corrosion-exposed exterior assembly. We apply heat treatment and stress relief where the specification requires it.

Fatigue Strength and Surface Treatments

Aerospace springs are subjected to significant stress and repetitive loading, and fatigue is the failure mode that matters most. With in-house shot peening and presetting, along with stress-relief heat treatment where the material requires it, AQS improves fatigue strength and dimensional stability so springs hold their rate and free length across millions of cycles. Presetting stabilizes the spring under load; shot peening builds compressive residual stress at the surface where fatigue cracks would otherwise start. High-cycle aerospace springs also see thermal load, and the heat generated in service can relax a spring that wasn’t stress-relieved correctly, so these surface and heat treatments are part of the manufacturing standard, not an upsell.

Testing, Traceability, and Documentation

Aerospace components require proof, not assurances. AQS supports load testing, dimensional verification, first article inspection (FAI), and material traceability from raw stock to finished part, with certifications available for the documentation your program requires. Traceability and full documentation are built into how we run production, so the parts you receive are backed by records your quality team can audit.

Aerospace Spring Types We Manufacture

AQS manufactures the full range of aerospace spring types and wire forms, including technical compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, flat wound springs, and custom wire forming. We produce components for a wide range of aircraft parts and aerospace applications, including, but not limited to:

Aerospace Applications

Springs and precision metal forms appear throughout the aircraft, and aerospace applications each set their own load, travel, and reliability requirements. AQS engineers custom springs for the specific aerospace application they serve, not to a generic catalog rate, and manufactures them to the same standard whether the run is a prototype batch or full production. The aerospace applications below are representative of the manufacturing AQS supports.

01

Flight Control Systems

Springs are critical to flight control systems, where consistent force and predictable return are safety functions, not conveniences. AQS manufactures flight control springs to tight tolerances so that load-at-height and return behavior stay repeatable across the full production run.

02

Cabin and Interior Components

Cabin and interior assemblies, from latches and hinges to overhead bins, galley hardware, and seating mechanisms, rely on springs and wire forms that cycle constantly and must never bind or fail. AQS produces these interior components with the finish and consistency assembly lines depend on.

03

Actuators and Motion Control

Actuators and motion-control mechanisms throughout the aircraft depend on springs engineered for precise force and travel. AQS builds compression, extension, and torsion springs for actuator and motion-control assemblies where dimensional control is what keeps the mechanism in spec.

Quality and Certifications

AQS is an ISO 9001:2015 certified spring manufacturer, certified since 2000. That is the quality management baseline your aerospace supplier qualification process requires. Our quality management system is also IATF 16949 registered, evidence of the process discipline and traceability rigor precision manufacturing demands. For aerospace specifications that call for specialized processing or an AS9100-scope certification AQS does not hold in-house, we work through certified outside processors and manage those requirements as part of the job.

Material traceability, first article inspection, and complete test reports give your quality team the records aerospace programs are built on. AQS has manufactured aerospace springs to specification since 1993, and all manufacturing is performed at our facility in Canby, Oregon. It is 100% made in the USA, with no offshore sourcing and no third-party subcontracting on precision components. That in-house manufacturing is what keeps aerospace parts consistent from the first article to the last across the aerospace industry we serve.

Collaborative Design Process

Custom aerospace springs are engineered, not ordered off a shelf, and AQS supports that engineering from the design phase forward. Our engineering team works from your existing blueprints, reverse engineers samples, or helps develop a new design from a technical consultation, whatever the program needs.

We collaborate with your team through the entire process, from prototyping to PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) and full production, catching tolerance problems before they become production failures. AQS also manufactures related custom springs and metal forms for industrial and commercial applications.
