Firearm Recoil & Buffer Springs

Recoil Springs & Buffer Springs — Precision Engineered for Reliable Cycling

High-performance recoil and buffer springs are small parts with a big job. At Anderson Quality Spring, we design and manufacture precision recoil and buffer springs in-house, ensuring quality control, faster lead times, and customization to meet your exact needs. Built from premium materials and manufactured to tight tolerances, our in-house production capabilities allow us to deliver precision springs trusted by OEMs, custom builders, and armorer shops.

Introduction to Firearm Components

Firearm springs are the foundation of any gun’s reliability and performance. Among these, the recoil spring stands out as an essential part, responsible for absorbing and managing the energy generated during firing. Located behind the bolt or within the slide, the recoil spring ensures a smooth cycling process after each shot. Alongside recoil springs, other critical components, such as buffer and ejector springs, play vital roles in maintaining consistent cycling, feeding, and overall function. Correctly specified springs help reduce wear, enhance reliability, and support the longevity of the firearm.

Why Recoil & Buffer Springs Matter

  • Control bolt speed and timing to improve reliability and reduce wear.
  • Absorb and return energy during firing to ensure consistent chambering and extraction, supporting critical functions like proper cycling and ejection.
  • Influence felt recoil, muzzle rise, and overall cycling smoothness.

Well-specified springs help firearms run cleaner, last longer, and perform predictably under load, maintaining reliable performance across thousands of cycles.

Recoil Spring Information

Recoil Springs

Designed for slide/bolt return in pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Available as:

  • Coil recoil springs (single and dual configurations)
  • Captive recoil assemblies (pre-assembled for drop-in replacement)
  • Progressive-rate options for heavy-buffer or suppressed builds

During the firing cycle, the recoil spring compresses and decompresses along its designated path, guiding the slide or bolt’s movement and ensuring reliable operation.

Buffer Springs

Engineered to work with buffer tubes and assemblies to control bolt carrier group velocity:

  • Standard buffer springs for factory-spec systems
  • Enhanced/extended life springs for high-round-count applications
  • Custom lengths and diameters to match proprietary buffer systems

Buffer selection is critical for tuning rifle performance, as choosing the appropriate buffer and spring combination directly impacts cycling reliability and ejection behavior. The use of spacers allows for adjustment of buffer tube length, improving compatibility with different calibers and gas system configurations. When selecting and installing buffer springs, always ensure compliance with arms regulation standards to maintain safe and reliable firearm operation.

Materials & Finishes

  • Music wire — economical, high-strength for standard duty.
  • Stainless steel — corrosion resistant for marine/harsh environments.
  • Chrome-silicon — excellent spring life and fatigue resistance for heavy-duty use, with materials chosen to achieve the desired spring yield for reliable firearm operation.

Finishes available: shot-peened, passivated, phosphate-coated — selected to match application needs.

Manufacturing & Quality Control

  • Precision coiling and end forming to ensure uniform seating and consistent rates.
  • Shot-peening and stress-relief processes to extend fatigue life.
  • Dimensional inspection, load testing—including verification of spring and buffer mass—and batch traceability for OEM and contract manufacturing.

Compatibility & Customization

We provide springs designed for easy installation in a wide range of gun models and platforms (examples: AR-style buffers, standard pistol slides, shotgun assemblies). If you need an exact match or a custom profile, our engineering team will work from your sample, drawing, or functional requirement to produce prototypes and production runs compatible with both standard and modified setups, ensuring correct installation for optimal performance.

Note: For safety and warranty reasons, installation and system tuning should be performed by a qualified gunsmith or armorer. Anderson Quality Spring does not provide instructions for firearm modifications.

Testing & Reliability

Every production lot includes:

  • Frequent dimensional in-process inspections to ensure high production yields.
  • Load testing for fatigue and longevity
  • Visual and dimensional FINAL inspections
  • Full traceability

It is best practice to regularly inspect and replace springs as needed to maintain firearm reliability and prevent malfunctions.

Applications

  • OEM production for firearms manufacturers
  • Aftermarket replacement and performance upgrades
  • Military and law enforcement supply contracts
  • Custom builds and gunsmith supply, ensuring proper spring selection to protect the firearm’s frame and enhance longevity

Installation & System Integration

Effective performance of recoil and buffer systems depends on precise integration of springs within the host platform’s mechanical architecture. Small deviations in free length, preload, guide-rod interface geometry, or tube tolerances can influence slide velocity profiles, bolt carrier timing, and overall system balance. During prototype development, controlled installation procedures and dimensional verification are essential to ensure that measured performance outcomes reflect the spring’s characteristics—not uncontrolled assembly variables.

Our engineering support team collaborates with OEM partners to evaluate integration constraints, identify tolerance stack-ups, and validate spring behavior within the full operating system, enabling predictable cycling, reduced wear, and consistent durability across production environments.

Ordering, Prototyping & Lead Times

We support single-sample prototyping and full production. Please provide a sample, drawing, or specification sheet, and our team will quote materials, processes, and lead time. For high-volume OEM projects, we offer JIT and Kanban support.
